  • 300 mg tablet with 5% tolerance means acceptable tablets between 285 and 315 mg.
  • The first time the operator sets up the press for a new product he will setup the weight close to nominal value by changing the fill depth cam.
  • When within a 10% weight range, the operator hits the "go to automatic" button
  • The press calls for an average tablet weight. The operator enters the average weight and the tablet press will correct the fill depth cam with the percentage the average weight deviates from the nominal weight.
  • The bottom pre-compression roller moves until a displacement between 0.1 and 0.5 mm is detected.
  • At this point the linear relationship between weight and slug height at pre-compression is valid. The tolerance for tablet acceptance on the pre-compression slug will also be 5%.
  • Let's suppose that the read out of the slug height is 5mm at pre-compression when the weight is on target. This means that all slugs between 4.75 and 5.25 mg will result in tablets between 285 and 315 mg.
  • The bottom pre-compression rollers will be positioned by the PLC so that the distance between the punches is 4.65 mm to create an average displacement of 0,35mm. Any top roller movement resulting in a displacement between 0.1 and 0.6 mm(4.65+0.1=4.75, 4.65+0.6=5.25mm) will result in tablets in the acceptance range for weight.
  • Within the acceptable limits for individual tablets a narrower limit is set to trigger weight corrections based on an average of 32 displacement values. The default parameter of the correction limit is set at 25% of the individual reject limit
  • The next time this tablet is produced, the settings will be restored from memory. The displacement limits will be recalculated but the transition to automatic will go very fast.
