Formerly known as the Aeromatic-Fielder Division, Niro Pharma Systems was formed in 2000 after Niro acquired additional pharmaceutical equipment technology through its parent company GEA-AG's acquisition of the Pharmaceutical Division of GEI International plc. This added new expertise and advanced capabilities in materials handling, tablet processing, and enhanced containment systems. In November 2005 GEA acquired the Freeze Drying Division of Steris GmbH and renamed the company GEA Lyophil. GEA Lyophil joined the other pharma companies in Niro Pharma Systems. Due to the success and the and rapid expansion of the GEA Process Engineering Segment it was in December 2007 / January 2008 decided to split the Division into the GEA Process Engineering Segment and the GEA Pharma Division. At the same time the brand and the business unit changed name from Niro Pharma Systems as GEA Pharma Systems.
