The pharmaceutical industry is of vital importance to Puerto Rico - The pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries generate over 30,000 direct jobs in Puerto Rico. This represents over 26% of the work force in the manufacturing sector. The pharmaceutical industry also provides a major market for other industries - it has been estimated that the related business generates approximately 96,000 jobs in Puerto Rico. The pharmaceutical industry represents 26% Island Gross Domestic Product. In 2004, Puerto Rico exports in the pharmaceutical industry reached $35.2 billion or 64% of all island exports. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical industry's commitment to research and development has generated breakthrough medicines and vaccines that have played a central role in this century's unprecedented progress in the treatment of fatal disease.

Companies that have made recent investments in the pharmaceutical industry in Puerto Rico include Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Merck and IVAX and European pharmaceutical companies operating in Puerto Rico include Warner Chilcott (Ireland), Clariant (Switzerland), AstraZeneca (UK), and GlaxoSmithKline (UK).

It has been said that Puerto Rico is the lowest cost gateway to the most lucrative life sciences market in the world. Here you can enjoy the benefits of operating within a U.S. jurisdiction, with the added tax benefits of operating under a foreign tax structure. Puerto Rico's value proposition offers an unparalleled combination of both financial and operational advantages that include:

  • no U.S. federal income tax
  • a local corporate income tax rate of 7% - 2%
  • U.S. dollar and banking system
  • U.S. legal system including intellectual property protection
  • U.S. customs area and easy access to U.S. mainland markets
  • And some pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies may qualify for the special "Pioneer" status with an income tax rate of 2% or lower.

For further information about the pharmaceutical industry in Puerto Rico please access The Pharmaceutical Industry Association of Puerto Rico website and the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (PRIDCO) website.

Interphex Puerto Rico is an important pharmaceutical industry event for production equipment and systems, process development, process automation, innovation, education, plant maintenance, and professional advancement.

At Interphex Puerto Rico, the Niro booth will feature the following Niro Inc. Business Groups:

GEA Liquid Processing

GEA Liquid Processing will be promoting their technology portfolio of cGMP unit operations that include Batching (GEA Batch Formula™ Systems), Fermentation (GEA-Diessel), Cell Rupture / Particle Size Reduction (Niro-Soavi) and other propreitary processes, all done to the industry standards of ASME BPE, GAMP, etc . Further, GEA Liquid Processing can take "single source" responsibility for the process integration of the unit operations and their CIP systems into the facility by providing P&ID development, detailed design & engineering, automation, project management, etc., thus providing secure outcomes to their customers.

Niro Pharma Systems

Niro Pharma Systems offer the single most comprehensive range of in-house designed and manufactured processing equipment to the pharmaceutical industry. This year at Interphex Puerto Rico we will focus on Contained Systems Integration, from the liquid processing through mixing, drying and granulation to tabletting - as cGMP increasingly require that product is fully contained during processing - not only to protect operators and environment but also to prevent cross-contamination. Added benefits of our systems integration includes improved productivity, increased yield, and efficient CIP though automation, process integration, and product know-how. Special emphasis will also be given to our newly acquired business group GEA Lyophil and their advanced range of both pilot and production size cGMP lyophilizers (a.k.a. the LYOVAC® range of lyophilizers).

Tim Hoover and Thorsten Vammen will give a technical presentation on February 2, 2007 from 10:10 to 11:10 AM in room 208B. The title of the seminar is "Practical Applications of Hygienic Design and CIP Integration". The presentation will touch many aspects of CIP (Cleaning-In-place) including information about hygienic design, compliance standards and rules, process integration, validation and documentation, asset utilization, and improved water / CIP-liquid efficiencies.
