This year, the Niro booth will feature the following GEA Companies and Business Groups:

GEA Liquid Processing
GEA Liquid Processing is dedicated to supplying "Unit of Operations" and process integration services to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. GEA Liquid Processing will show several modular cGMP "unit ops", including a GEA Diessel Fermentation System and a GEA Niro Soavi Homogenizer skid for cell lysing (rupture) and particle size reduction applications. The unit op modular systems are built to the industry standards of ASME BPE, GAMP, etc.. Process integration services start at identifying the process requirements, thru P&ID development, to fabrication, automation and qualification.

GEA Niro Soavi
For some time GEA Niro Soavi has set the standard for Very-High-Pressure (VHP) homogenizers for pharmaceutical and biotech applications. The scope of supply ranges from table-top laboratory machines through to in-house designed and manufactured production units. GEA Niro Soavi manufactures high-pressure pumps and homogenizers in compliance with the ISO 9001 QA program.

GEA Niro Soavi will display the NS1001L Panda 2K which is a tabletop model designed for the laboratory needs of companies processing biochemicals, chemicals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. In the pharmaceutical/biochemical area, the Panda's ability to test small samples at very high pressures allows laboratory studies on particle micronization and cell rupture. Special homogenizing valves are available for cell rupture applications. The Panda processes small volumes of liquids and pumpable fluids, homogenizing samples at rates up to approximately 10 l/h at pressures up to 21,750 psi (1500 bar). The unit is designed to handle feeds at high viscosity (up to 20,000 cP) and temperatures to 194° F (90°C) without feed pumps.

Niro Pharma Systems

Niro Pharma Systems offer the single most comprehensive range of in-house designed and manufactured processing equipment to the pharmaceutical industry. This year at Interphex 2005 we will focus on Contained Systems Integration, from the liquid processing through mixing, drying and granulation to tabletting - as cGMP increasingly require that product is fully contained during processing - not only to protect operators and environment but also to prevent cross-contamination. Added benefits of our systems integration includes improved productivity, increased yield, and efficient CIP though automation, process integration, and product know-how.

Niro Pharma Systems will display the following units/systems:

  1. The new PMA Pharma Matrix™ 65 Compact Mixer / Granulator. The Pma Pharma Matrix™ is a enclosed batch mixer / granulator, designed on aerodynamic principles characterized by a main bottom-driven mixing impeller and a high speed side positioned granulator. The resultant combination of the fluidized vortex movement of the constituents while circulating within the mixing bowl, plus the addition of granulation media provides fast, reproducible granulation.
  2. The new MP-Micro™ laboratory bench-top fluid bed processor. It is purpose designed for R&D projects and is the optimal choice for the first steps in recipe and process development using a small amount of material. The MP-Micro™ can be used for drying, top spray granulation and bottom spray coating.
  3. The Collette MicroGral™ is a small batch one pot processor for high shear granulation and pelletization process development.
  4. The Buck® Valve hicoflex® SL-Coupling is based on the same principal as the Buck® Split Valve technology, whereby two complementary half-seals are hermetically locked onto one another. This facilitates mutual opening and closing as a one piece seal. The half-seals of the hicoflex® SL-Coupling operate on the same principle as the snap ring seals of a spectacle case. When two of these seals dock together they ensure that the product to be transferred is completely isolated from the environment during the transfer process. When the transport sack is empty and the other respectively full, both seals close and contamination free separation between the two bags can take place.

GEA Filtration

GEA Filtration is a world-leading supplier of cross-flow membrane filtration systems to the biotech, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. GEA Filtration utilizes ceramic, polymeric spiral wound, and stainless steel membranes in our nanofiltration, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis plants. Applications include: fermentation broth clarification/cell harvest; concentration, clarification, and demineralization of amino acids, antibiotics, enzymes and proteins; recovery of trace substances, CIP liquid and solvents; effluent treatment.

GEA Filtration will exhibit pilot plant type M Pharma which is a cGMP laboratory-scale test plant designed for feasibility testing of cross-flow membrane filtration applications in the Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), Nanofiltration (NF) ranges. The unit can be set up for evaluation of a variety of membrane formats including spiral-wound, ceramic, stainless steel and hollow fiber.

Courtoy

For over 80 years, Courtoy has been designing, building and servicing superior and versatile rotary tablet presses for the pharmaceutical and other industries. As a leader in technology and product innovation we have developed specific know-how such as weight control based on displacement measurement; special punch-tip and in-die lubrication systems; containment technology; state-of-the-art double layer presses. Courtoy will feature the Modul™ range of tablet presses. The Modul™ presses not only enable lower production cost per tablet but also added operator protection (against increasingly potent drugs). Courtoy will also demonstrate the cleaning of an Exchangeable Compression Module (ECM). The self-contained ECM holding all product contact parts is removed from the press onto a trolley by means of an incorporated arm. This trolley is rolled to a wash skid, where three high-performance spray nozzles are attached while still maintaining complete containment. The PLC program on the wash skid runs a user-defined program using cold and warm water in combination with detergents and other cleaning agents, and rinsing with purified water. GEA Liquid Processing can supply the CIP system required to wash and clean the ECM.

Tuchenhagen Flow Components

Tuchenhagen Flow Components offer an impressive range of sanitary mixproof, single-seat, divert, sample, pressure relief and modulating control valves as well as numerous "pocket-free" inline instruments, cleaning devices, and aseptic pipe fittings. Tuchenhagen Flow Components will exhibit several different VARlVENT® valves - featuring the best design for process plants where product quality, hygiene and operational safety require the use of high quality components.

Tuchenhagen Flow Components will also display automated product recovery system (pigging system) that reduce the loss of valuable products, production down time, consumption of rinsing water, consumption of cleaning media and the waste water load. The Tuchenhagen Product Recovery System is often integrated into a GEA Liquid Processing CIP system. Tuchenhagen Flow Components will also show a new range of sterile valves - the Vestas® range. With its new VESTA sterile valve series, Tuchenhagen Flow Components offers the first practical, cost-effective alternative to diaphragm valves. The full benefits of VESTA sterile valves, both technical and economic, have yet to be fully realized as new applications become apparent. VESTA sterile valves fully meet the operational requirements for processes at the highest level, comply with the strictest safety regulations and provide a high quality product. The most important features of the new design are: hermetic and safe sealing by PTFE bellows with a patented sealing system, high bellows service life, actuator systems made of high-grade synthetic material or stainless steel, and easy servicing.

The Vestas® valves will also be mounted on the Diessel Fermentation Systems which will also be on display.
