Improved Granulate Quality By Use of Swinging Bowl

In view of the current trend in pharmaceutical industry to move towards increased containment, many old production processes need to be reviewed. The traditional 'open' processes of granulation in planetary mixers and drying in ovens are gradually replaced with more contained processes such as One-Pot processing. The drug formulations for such processes often contain only a small amount of binder or a weak binder, and produce weak granulations that are easily broken by mechanical action. In a standard One-Pot processor, the necessary action of the mixer arm during drying causes attrition of the granulate and the creation of fines, which may result in tabletting problems.

UltimaPro™ 10

The UltimaPro™ range by Collette NV now offers a solution to those problems by using a swinging bowl to move the product during drying. The swinging action of the bowl has 2 important effects during drying. First the product is brought into contact with the energy source for drying - the heated wall - without activating the mixer arm, thus without exerting mechanical stress on the product. Secondly, the contact surface between the product and the heated wall is increased, thus optimizing the energy transfer necessary for drying. Studies have shown a significant reduction in the amount of fines created after drying when a swinging bowl was used, thus improving the tabletting process. Also the drying time was significantly reduced when using the swinging bowl, which is an important economic aspect.

The UltimaPro™ of Collette NV, equipped with a swinging bowl, thus presents a solution for processing old, weak formulation in a modern, contained way.
