The best milling procedure has a name: Millstar.

Efficient brewing starts with appropriate milling. The last three decades of practical experience have proven the efficiency of GEA Liquid Processing's steeping conditioned milling concept. Our Millstar combines the advantages and benefits of conventional wet and dry milling. This method ensures almost perfect husk conservation and optimal grinding of the endosperm, which provides numerous advantages for your brewing process and your final product beer.

Permanence creates efficiency.

Millstar stands for convincing performance in the brewhouse. In terms of capacity it can compete with any other milling system and method. A further important advantage of the Millstar: the comparably low capital expenditure and the excellent cost-benefit ratio. The conversion from conventional dry milling to the Millstar system alone yields a capacity increase of up to 20%. Therefore the investment pays off within a very short period of time. In combination with the lauter tun we achieve a real win-win situation: in terms of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Millstar plus lauter tun is by far the most efficient solution for your brewhouse.

No compromises on beer quality.

With its special milling method and gentle grain treatment the Millstar contributes to a higher beer quality. Instead of finely grinding the grain, it is crushed in a way to ensure optimal extraction and subsequent wash-out in the lauter tun. This does not only enable higher lauter tun loads. Due to the smaller surface and the fast processing the crushed grain is less susceptible to oxidation, which would affect beer quality. One more advantage for the flavor stability of your beer.

Compact design, easy upgrade.

The Millstar has a really convenient and clever design. Steeping condition, crushing and mashing-in take place in one unit. Due to this compact and highly integrated design the space requirements are much lower than for dry milling systems. Special explosion protection measures are almost completely unnecessary. The modular design of the new 40 t Millstar allows fast and simple maintenance. Last but not least, the Millstar can be easily integrated into existing brewhouses.

What makes the new Millstar so special:

  • Hygienic design, for simple and efficient cleaning
  • Positive displacement mash pump; mashing-in of malt and water with a ratio of up to 1:2
  • Modular design: roller support frame fully demountable; up to 2 working days less for roller exchange
  • Level control in mash hopper for lower oxygen load and to avoid mash flotation
  • Quality automation system: feed roller speed control based on grist throughput rates, providing longer steeping time for poorly dissolved batches
  • Temperature and flow of steeping water adjustable to required water absorption
  • Precise and convenient adjustment of the roller gap
  • Large-dimensioned rollers for optimal crushing and husk conservation
  • Option: mash acidification with inline pH-adjustment
  • Optional inert gas protection for completely oxygen-free milling and mashing-in
